Fugitive Pieces

7.

A dog & a bear walked into a bar.
Whatelit be? The bear ordered a saw
& sawed the dogs head off. But how

could I feel sorry for the dog, who
sat there laughing like an idiot?
At first I couldn't believe what I saw,

the saw & the sawing done, &
the hirsute sawyer, but after 3 days
I believed it. I went to the doctor

to explain what I had seen, & he sd
you were drunk, but I explained that
I hadn't even started. He waved & sd

give me a call sometime, & put
into my hand 3 small lovely pills. So
I swallowed them, but did not call the Dr.—

choosing instead to return to the bar
where the bear had killed the dog.
What'll it be. A magic carpet, I sd.

So he bends over and what do you know,
stands back up with a rolled up carpet
& plops it onto the bar. I put a 20

on the polishd oak & sat conscientiously,
gazing both at the carpet & the bartender.
At last I workd up the courage to ask him:

If you painted a hole in a mountain w/ black
paint, would that constitute a tunnel?
He started laughing, laughing like an idiot.

19.

A dog & a bar walked into a bear,
and the bear sd, hey, what's the idea?
Just like that, like some guy getting

bullied by a couple of roughs in a bar
in Monterey, in a film made in the 40s.
So the dog laid into the bear, while

the bar just sat there, as bars will do,
& growled something fierce, growling
something, fiercely. But the bear held

his ground, & with his arms akimbo,
like somebody's domineering grandmother,
growled even louder, at which point

the dog pinned his ears to the side of
his head & apologized; but the bear
was having none of it, & suddenly threw

his arms wide, & brandished his claws,
when suddenly the bar stood up, by which
I mean became vertical, & loured over

the bear, who was daunted, having never
seen a bar do that kind of thing, & the bear
sd, hey, what's the idea, like a cowardly lion

in a film from the 30s, & stepped back,
dammit! right into a bear trap, at which
point the dog laughed & pointed, &

it was easy to see, by the look on his face,
that he was sure he had been avenged,
until the bar suddenly fell, & crushed him.

Diin Ocquonoctua (A Sound Poem)

Poems performed are poems sounded, where the sounding by the voice or by instruments acting as surrogate voices can bring a new sense of power/empowerment to performers and auditors. The further extensions and transformations of voice move it closer and closer to "the condition of music," to the point where words and syntax — the common constituents of language — are obscured, subordinated, or totally abandoned. The push toward such a poetry has long been present at the far limits of the modernist project and with it the recognition of similar processes and works outside of literature as such. Thus Velimir Khlebnikov, early in the game, with reference to a traditional Russian poetry equivalent to his newly minted zaum language:

Spells and incantations, what we call magic words, the sacred language of paganism … are rows of mere syllables which the intellect can make no sense of, and they form a kind of beyondsense [zaum] language in folk speech. Nevertheless an enormous power over mankind is attributed to these incomprehensible and magic spells, a direct influence upon the fate of man. … The magic in a word remains magic even if it is not understood and loses none of its power. Poems may be understandable or they may not, but they must be good, they must be truthful. (Translation from the Russian by Paul Schmidt) - Jerome Rothenberg  http://www.ubu.com/ethno/soundings.html

We're almost there he sd, which means to make
Him supple again, wich means to flesh Him out,
Extend? perhaps Baruch would say & take

some soup or toke, for we had heard about
his fancy for a puff & liked his pipe.
It's something in this thing of one & aught,

some ancient, primal, irreducible pip
at the beginning, wich wld be a point.
But could it be that all we have is hope,

the truth of faith, the struggle for a hint
from Him, to whom we pray and raise a roof
and say it's a temple? Now, Midway ain't no saint

sd Reynolds, that's for sure, and if you want proof
just look him over, he's sick & thin & white,
and if there's any smoother, silkier calf

than his, I'm Lincoln's grandfather. That's right,
I says, & let me tell you all about it,
like Tuco, who had felt the rope pull tight,

& as for yr ass, you cld feel the devil bite it!
We're coming closer to the devil's tower
whan the 19 seventees became excited

w visions of alien & other than our
intelligence & machinery, whan dark invaders
walked our skies and workd w unseen power

& used the Force to stump the silly raiders
of Cosmos who had gone to the other side
& dumbly swung for Chaos 'gainst the Creator's

will. This Davies' 9th's no joke, than Midway sd
but hath a certain twang of Richard Strauss
leastways at's how it struck me in the head.

Blue Red

for Tad Rapid & Tirds McGee

Blood is blue inside and red
outside ∴  Blue good, red bad.
Red: Alarm. Red stands
for police & ambulance.

Blue: Mel's Passion: Think
Gesthemane, in blue: Good.
Blue link, good link;
Red link, no link ∴

Blue good, red bad: Red light:
Stop, but green light—
wait, no, yellow that— wait
Red cross good, right?

Yes, right, right ∴  red cross
should be blue cross? And?
Blue Cross Blue Shield !
Cross is Christ, yes, and

plus sign tilted becomes an X and
x means times, that's right, and yes,
t means Time, of course, of course
∴  plus/minus one/zero equals a little and

of course a horse
is a horse of course
and Paul saw Peter
and Peter saw Paul

and 42
means

Limericks for a Few Friends & Fambly on National Limerick Day

There once was a lady named Heather,
Who liked going out in bad weather.
She danced as it rained
And never complained,
And then flew away like a feather.**

*

There once was a lady named Lorie,
whose life had a lot of backstory:
She'd model and hang
with some rockers who sang
of their days of hootch-induced glory.

*

There once was a lady named Jenny
Who went to the bank for a twenty
But it seemed that the teller
was an obstinate feller
And refused to give Jenny any.

*

There once was a girl named Tamara
who stole the gurl Billiam's tiara
to show she was queen
of the hospital scene
(in Havasu, not Guadalajara).

*

There once was a chimp named Unky
who was a spectacular monkey,
and his Uncle William
(a.k.a Billiam)
was a diehard Jethro Tull junkie.

*

There once was a boy named Jordan
who was really quite handsome, accordin'
to some; and he drew
lots of pictures, and knew
his Karate. So Don't piss off Jordan!

*

There once was a young man named Tirds
who had a great talent with words
that he got from his father
and also his mother
who both were poetry nerds.

^ for my eldest, Jared, who writes villanelles and groks Opeth lyrics. He calls himself Tirds McGee.

*

There once was a Mama named Kim
who always went out on a limb
for her babies. Her love was
as pure as that dove was
that Noah saw flying to him.

Aster

TIME

It rose up like a black ship from the sea,
that top hinge of a giant serpent-mouth,
and broke the dipping sunlight on its teeth.
The poets lobbed out ordnance from the quay:
tick-tocking iambs beat an ancient pulse
as tongue and breath were yoked in ritual;
spruce measures pattered on its hide like knells,
or, lighting in that maw, were swallowed whole.

The bottomless gullet sucked up dribbled edges
of dazzling tropes and metaphors, duets
of perfect rimes flew in a desperate volley;
but when the sunset’s dazzling pinks and oranges
gave way, and far white stars winked like shallots,
then silence blossomed in the monster’s belly.

RUSE

The poets agreed in their subterrenean nave
to write more poems in praise of monsters, though
that would not waylay Time whose tongues of snow
inexorably licked each architrave,
blew gales of slow frost on each martyred figure
frozen in glass, snuffed out their sputtering tapers,
curled up and browned the edges of their papers,
contained one acolyte in ten with rigor

mortis. And so they sank leviathans
into the mundane deeps, set basilisks
on bridges, sang out Gaudete as griffins
stormed ramparts with their wings like m‘s, or chevrons.
Mastodons rode men upon their tusks
and Jacks with bright knives divvied up the women.

SOLO

Their one goal was to keep the people guessing,
and so they delved an apsis underground,
beneath the sound of heel and radial passing,
hidden away from even their maker’s hand
that scooped out blindly with a lifer’s spoon
the earth in rinds as hard as baker’s chocolate:
a buried enclave or ulterior Camelot
where in reverberating baritone

they summoned every lusus naturae
that answered their demonic invocations:
chimera, hydra, gargoyle, cockatrice;
and yet those apples of the devil’s eye
would still, despite a thousand permutations,
confess their sire, a chafing onanist.

ASTER

He scratched his head and thought of naval ships
at war upon some master’s oily water:
the canvas flying in flames, the shredded banners,
cannons firing billowy mushroom shapes.
He realized he’d given up his secrets:
he couldn’t see it straight, the ding an sich,
but twice removed he rifled through the pockets
of those to whom his beggaring lines were schtick,

the junk and jetsam of a live half-lived,
the stale bilgewater of a secondhander.
And so he rallied all those bogeymen
with which his suicidal brain was gravid
and watched his tiny reputation founder:
one title less for his memorial stone.

ABADDON

Despite it all he winds down fractured stairs
turning wide-eyed in cloudy dream spirals
that might be akin to those legendary gyres
he heard tell of. The yattering tongues of bells
still flood the echoing dark with o‘s like obols,
where mouths that never kiss still omm in ovals.

But he knew that before the poem started,
that it was never the brighter thresh of sleighbells
or happier clicks and clacks of jacks or marbles
that drew him inexorably to his inverted
Pleasure Dome, his topsy-turvy Eldorado,
mock-gothic and profane basilica,
darkling Atlantis, gloomy Shangri-la:
another dupe to his dear Amontillado.

CHTHONIC

There he scanned the breadth of his brain’s horizon
like one plunged headlong in the ultimate pit:
some vengeful Lucifer or madcap Urizen
droning his self-obsessed magnificat -

while in a derelict garden statuary
stood tiptoe in the rain and minor angels
wrestled in windfall when an ordinary
sunset flared the stark walls of Tintagel
stuck on its evergreen and desolate hill
hard by an unbroken sea no man could ride,
its waters churned white by the serpent’s tail -

and heard the dead men cross the Bridge of Sighs
heading for holes in the ground that were the size
of graves, where they were buried until they died.

SIGHTINGS

On Presidents’ and Independence day
the colors in the evening sky flashed
in the Hudson River whose slow waters washed
against his feet. Better recall July
than bleak and gaunt-boughed, icy February
when wind swept off the sleepy river and smashed
the glass of his gollum-eyes to a fire-splashed
blur. In summer time he watched ships ferry
up and down the river, past Bannerman’s Island.

He only saw it from the shore: a brushwork
rook-shape in the air was all he gleaned
of a castle, once fortress and stockpiled armory.
The Indians said the place was haunted. Naturally
The locals saw strange lights there in the dark.

HAUNTED

He never saw those lights, though often he gazed
out toward that island from the mountain road
above West Point or from the riverside
where it was said a failed cadet composed
his Ulalume. Now maybe there’s your ghost,
he thought, that gloomy subterranean bard
remembered for his bells and his black bird?

And yet he knows there really is no ghost,
knows that the dead are happy in their tombs;
that though the eye is easily tricked the mind
is the softer touch; that even if men were blind
the dark would resonate with spirit voices
crying out angrily from forsaken places
or whispering to themselves in empty rooms.

The Reynolds Poems

WAMBLE

Reynolds and me we roamed like vaqueros,
spat on the range, ate gooseberry pie
on checkered table cloth. A buxom blonde
with bouncing locks brought in a bisquit basket.

Old father Hubbard wouldn’t let us feed
until we lowered our pates and panted amens
so Penny the meatfed farmer’s daughter
calmly her words loured over us like clouds

while long the lank bookseller leaned
his phiz slant on the board and nodded
ably along I raised my stubble chin
and so took in the breach between her breasts:

like Christmas loaves, like partridges,
like banks of snow or gabardine.
Reynolds was later on to claim
he sniffed invective in the snapping

knuckles of the farmhands, sure,
but all was well and over the trilling hills
the churchbells clinked like ice-chunks
in that big-ticket manse of a hash house

by shitfouled water near the sapless tracks
on which Old George was flattened,
leastways his rendered smiler embossed
on strangely expendable two-bit pieces,

for how could those scabkneed ragamuffins’
pockets tinkle with mugs and buffaloes?
which isn’t to say they weren’t toughened
by threadbare denim or queer duck aunts

who fixed their shoes with cardboard snipped
from cereal boxes where black cooks beamed
and proffered bowls of steaming meal,
but none for me nuncle no for me neither.

Now see how one in a kerchief slimmed
and gained in cultural cool and hip aplomb
what she had lost in the crupper (which
is also good for something), still,

our corporate suits are taking baby steps
toward civility, which reminds me,
Reynolds, I said, we never do what we say,
we always talk too much and never get on with it:

we said we’d jump a train to Baltimore,
stow-away on a cargo ship to San Juan.
We’ll see those palms and temples of the south
before we croak. But as it happens

we slouched along and found Camp Crook,
a couple of rattlebrained galoots,
and no one nowhere, no, not anyone,
will ever tell our sorry story.

AMERICANS (MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND)

They come with shades propped like tiaras,
like royalty, says Reynolds, pushing up his shirtsleeves,
they keep falling down, he says, turning up another roll
sodden with sweat and fouled bleachwater.

What a way to make a living. A pidgeon beats
out of the dumpster like some greasy phoenix,
clank of bottles, fetor of beer, milkfat rice krispies.
Scared the piss out of me too, the bugger.

That’s what this town has done, he says,
lighting a smoke, made cadgers of the birds,
made their lives too easy, like under the Bridge
those ducks paddling fatly along like pontoons.

But isn’t that the nature of living things,
to take the easiest way? I says, and he flips
the cigarette to the other side of his mouth
like he was Clint Eastwood and the sun glaring

like a nimbus over his hat, sure, but it doesn’t
mean I have to like it. Look at that one, proud
as a peacock, lord of that pile of residuum.
You’re no poet, I say, a pidgeon like a peacock.

Meanwhile some genius in his courtly muscle shirt
left us a dead battery on the tarmac,
smack in the middle of a parking lot, like he figures
there’s no lawnorder here in Mayberry,

and that’s really what he thinks, he says,
look, there’s an El Camino with some screaming
retards in the back stopped dead in conversation
with some other screaming retards in an Escalade

fuckdab in the middle of the avenue.
Seven bullets for seven screaming retards.
But I know he doesn’t mean it, that’s Reynolds
for you, he’s just can’t stand the fact

that he’s good for nothing but this kind of grind,
he knows it and I know it, but thanks
to good oldfashioned human ingenuity
we can bury the facts in a slagheap of becauses

and even dodge our faces in the mirror,
except when we shave, when we do, at which times
we’re bashful like suicide girls with no beads
and boy’s hair dyed pitch and impeccant breasts.

UPSTATE NEW YORK BY AUTOMOBILE

Take those coal-gathering Chinamen, he says, dangling
like Christmas lights, and slides his finger straight
to skim the foam, or those Lakota Sioux
they rounded up like a bunch of knock-off Hummels:

We’re planted when they’ve tapped us of our resources,
when we can’t make the mercury budge its scant degree,
or curios, uncle-eyed in sepia prints,
praised for our wisdom and dancing, then scattered like dung.

In North Plank Tavern, under the highest ceiling
I ever saw in a fuddlehole, we got stiff.
The barman took our money and poured our lagers
in schooners where the sediment swam like sea-monkeys.

Monks brewed this stuff. It’s punchy like wine. So easy.
Well, I was way beyond easy, so Reynolds, he hied me
home in that tight little saffron Karmann Ghia.
There’s not much else to this story, says Reynolds,

hands on the clock, taking tree-skirted turns
as savvy as a gigilo under the hood
or behind her wheel, letting her do the driving.
The snow doesn’t care, or cud in the hinged cow-mouth,

rocks in the fences wet since Washington,
silos’ cracks, dodgy salamanders’ spots.
I showed him my poems, but Reynolds, he just shied,
blonde unbeliever with long-soured Mayflower blood.

OF DEATH IN THE HOUSE OF THE HALF-DEAD

The question is never should I or can I or when
but how, and it has to be quick, no chance to back out,
no chance of failure, he says, and stares through drapes
that have become nostalgic, so memorably ugly,

at farm equipment scattered like artworks: tires
long still, weed-bellied; tractors; worn-out backhoes,
combines, furrow ploughs; coiled chickenwire.
Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, you only skewer them,

compass-straight through fields, random clumps
of trees no bumpkin scribbler oded, patches of snow.
He stares in the rancid cloud of hangover, eyes
chasing the clamoring rigs that blacken the banks

on either side of the highway, oily gutturals
loud and punctual; and here they equal ritual,
ground the wanderer like the tink of churchbells,
taillights at sunset melancholy, like candles.

Here I am wondering if he really means it,
and sip warm water from the clotted taphole,
bully through channels where a tenor drawl
is absurdly normal, like rips in a shower curtain,

a bald spot in the carpet, blanched and crepe-flat,
the bolted-down remote, the absence of spirits,
and decide right then and there, Reynolds, I say,
this is the place, right here. Let’s haunt it: shriek

by the ice machine, nocturnal god whose voice
is a glassy harrumph, by the front desk, out in the gravel
where radials come crunching and reluctantly stop,
blow out gray windows and the tacky drapes

with death-breath, boozy from some vague beyond,
make neatly wrapped soap wafers levitate,
make plastic cups buoy up and break the mirrors.
He smiles, turning from the window, from the song

of semis, and he says, there should be a law, he says,
no mirrors in these havens of the half-dead
who have passed from vanity into nonchalance,
from bloodwet life to strawy limbo. Hollowmen.

So he takes his belt for its heavy buckle and whacks
with a quick whine of lashwind and gladly cracks
his leaping reflection, the shockhole and its deltas
of tiny fissures scream once and once only,

an impotent exlamation, coward’s signature,
material fullstop for a weakling’s sentence.
It won’t be seen, but new bedding will be smoothed
by hands not watched by dead eyes buried in the sky.

THE DEATH OF ROMANCE

We walked over the hill behind the house
where Reynolds was whelped, heads stoned with lead
cloud, gray mist, smoke. My strange hands curled
like marionettes.

I swept my arm to refer to the square fields,
and fancied a battlescene. He just snickered,
but that was his power, the ever-present elbow
in the kidney.

I thought of Napoleon’s armies or some king’s:
a country quilt’s innocuous slide across linen,
the bloodless advance of logic and order
over stone fences

across the field’s furrows, wintered hard.
Imagine a skinny horn pressed to a mouth
still barely dry from its mother’s nipple, breath
from a virgin’s piehole

threading the brass throat, aspirates hallooed
in gold fear-pitch. And bullets punching zeroes
in birch trees where they stood like girls behind
the marching tyros,

white, switch-waisted. By that quick dismissal
he gave me the wrench for my silly machine
that chugged and coughed: faces that stared skyward,
eyes turned off.

SACCHARINE

Reynolds said Parker Dam looked a sight better steeped
in sugar, lime and salt. All those daiquiris,
pina coladas, margaritas: they sat in the belly
heavily like the drawl in drinking songs.

No spittoons, but you could smell the flannel,
the chaw-grueled sawdust, hear the specious twang
of leatherskinned and bottleblonde-mopped
California girls under ridiculous hats.

I was saying I took a girl here once, changing
the subject. Which was? She drank cape cods
and poked odd numbers into clattering cups.
Eyes applauded, fastened on copper-rivets.

Did you ever think you could have everything?
Yes, when I kissed her later. But that fancy was dead
in the chute, killed by a slow sunrise, back-strain
and headache, lemon-sharp light, lemon-bitter.

The heart is a mayfly, but a fool’s delusion
won’t cost him. See, the pendulum swings narrow,
closer to the pulling core, each interval
between soft clicks drawing toward silence.

GAIA THE GREEN GODDESS

I spared a thought for Gaia the green goddess
under the bridge where the Colorado seethed
with shadowy sucker fish. Knees to the chain,
I cast out pellets bought from a gumball machine

for panhandling ducks and gulls. Reynolds ogled
wandering hennas and washing-instruction tags.
Notice, he says, the eyes are dark enigmas
furtive behind reflecting shades because

in everything, Americans have it backwards:
soul-windows shuttered and kept for lovers, asses
out like bedsheets drying down Maple Drives.
Take Gaia for instance, he says, the deified

collective guilt of the not-me generation,
a fresh spook for the Olympian compost heap.
It wasn’t enough they roasted Servetus
or buried the living in the Dungeons of Venice,

drove Nietzsche mad or made those leggy blondes
crusade down boulevards in Sin City
with pamphlets and a balsawood cross to claim
if you don’t know Him you’ll gnash your teeth forever.

They make her up sexy and sleek as a pop icon,
the first tight-bottomed queen of the universe
with breasts like adams apples, jewel-bellied,
sweatbanded wrists and a bitchy middle-finger

saluting Yahweh and every swaggering cock
that crows at His command; but still she’s spun
of the same old stuff: hominian dreams of dominion,
vanity trumped up, dressed in a beggar’s togs,

contempt for brains and a cowardly wish to snuff them
out like tapers. There’s one of them there,
that knapsacked wanderer with her arms stretched out
like Jesus, tie-dyed sleeves dotted with birdshit.

THE BEARD

He could be all of us turning up at once:
a quetching chorus in the skull machine,
the I of yesterday in a fresh skin-layer,
or, as Odysseus said to the one-eyed giant,
No-man. Let him rein this Rosinante and tilt
at will-o’-the-wisps, shoulder the tongue’s slips,
the accidents of misremembering.

He has his shoulder to the wheel, his nose
to the smell of his belly-hole. He can lie
and swear, his hand in the honey jar,
slide through the rabbit hole, a greasy thief.

Let him come up in a flash of sulphur,
Gehenna-dragon, Mephistopheles,
and drop his poison in my ear, possess
each neuron, make me over. He was tall
in the snow-fringed furrows, weed-savvy
seed-finder and bud collector, gaunt Fagin
who got me sotted in the farmer’s fields
from a flask in his old topcoat, iconoclast
who hated poems and prefered the aphotic
mysteries in motors. I see him masked

in the light of a welder’s arc, my father’s son
who never was. But he is Janus-faced,
not only this friend of oily metal but grunt
and greenhorn, fingers chafed with bleach and fouled
water who haunts with fat birds in the stink
of scrapheaps. He’s my good friend, Reynolds.

Tranku: by a touch, it is a valley well light

By a touch, it is a valley well light.
A passionflower and colorful flowers
including Daisy,
I express the everlasting

"Mai kind of waterweed Dahl"
who I am extra-fine
in body Ikuji, and is light,
A thin, mild soft texture.

A one point flower motif of the left side,
A pretty design.
With the strap of the wide stretch lace, it is hard to encroach,
I reduce the burden to a shoulder.

Shortish culottes of the relief type
footwork to a skirt comfortably.
The main body color of the ivory
becomes the pink.

Spirit

This is the guy I was telling you about.
So I stepped through the door, a little
carnation in my lapel, a dapper Dan
shaking my chain. She liked my chin,
my charnel savvy. I left the room and returned
later in the afternoon.

There are other kinds of being I mentioned
down at the service station. Yassir Nawssir.
Top your fluids too, twunnynineniyniefie.
Tarmac glistened, rills crawled over the road.
Birds turned lazy circles: naahtsokay.
Gehenna's angels.

Wiped a clear wedge in the windshield
and noted all emergency phones.
Radials no good, car too long
in dry dock; a/c kaput, and heading
south: Yuma, then Abaddon.
Tapped harvest.

Hanging Around with Pat

It didn't matter if we were having dinner,
watching a film,
or just strolling along, Pat was a winner. Swans
have this aplomb too, and most morticians. We poured
spackle on his shoes, gave him purple
hermans through his blazer,
he just smiled and nodded, smooth as a balloon.
You didn't see his hands much, they were
usually in his pockets, fumbling with silver dollars.
He was taller than you might think.
I saw him duck
as we tooled under an overpass,
lips sealed like a stranger aiming a rifle. He never
told us where he lived, if he had a wife,
a girl or what. Of course
we never asked him.

He looked stony under palms, but it suited him.
You only saw his hands
when they were in the open,
or his face,
that smirk in half-bloom, and the eyes
that blinked two, maybe three times in a day.
I paused before I stepped on the pedal,
looked furtively in my rear-view.
He rocked on his heels, hands in pockets,
immaculate tie, suit still pressed.
He waved at people who passed along the freeway,
and even the dogs seemed to know him.
I hated to leave him on the side of the road,
his pantlegs ruffling in the wind.
We drove by [later that same evening]
but he was gone.

He always looks unreal on television,
like uncooked oatmeal; and his shifty eyes
avoid the camera, the constant blonde
who stares him down. Of course he's in love
with her. You can tell by his hands.

We started to doubt if it was Pat we courted
that night, bought supper for,
took to a film he strongly disliked.
He never actually said his name was Pat,
we just assumed.
I recalled next morning
the blush of a shadow on his cheek
and he never instinctively shooshed a clamor
of conversation.
She undid the top button of her blouse
but he never peeked, though
you could see the tension in his hands,
like stopping the spin of a fourteen pound ball
fresh out of the return.

We never watch the show now, having seen
the back of his head for more than thirty seconds,
having seen him sit down,
put his hand to his mouth,
politely clear his throat.

Harsh Job Yen (J. Ashbery): Exercise

This sitting and typing, I'm done with it.
Dry brows in artificial light, the click
of calloused pads in shuttered rooms.
Shy monks stroll the boulevards, scribblers yawn
among pidgeons. There's no hunger without shape,
no ennui stranded in its vacuum.
I watched two men hauling garbage
behind the diner, mouths
pursed around their simple vowels. Qwerty
is enigma.

The higher primates will happen upon Lear
soon enough. I've had it.
I want inspector's gloves, safe temperatures,
bleach, fifty parts per million.
Quiddity waits in the third sink
in quaternary solution.
You kill mice.

The Shadow Men

Several men filed into a clearing
and some sat down to rest
on a hollow log covered
with green moss that most
would venture to say was green

and some saw men who levitated
seated on nothing but air
and quietly they were astonished
It did make a sound No it
did not it did did not

when out of the end of the hollow
log a mouse came
and some of the seven or nine men
saw the mouse and said
look it's a moose

You mean mouse
No I mean moose You're crazy
Look at the antlers
Some of the men saw nothing
and were deeply concerned

The fourteen suns arched slowly
the twelve suns ran quickly
the eight suns were still
The shadow men bickered and babbled
and some filed out of the clearing

Circles: an Experiment

Brad tugged a cigarette from the box,
rolled it back up his short sleeve, flicked
a lighter open and birthed a cherry. He flexed
his tat for Audrey, whose backside tensed
in her pleated skirt.

Something in the efficient grumble of V-eights,
of a moon slipping down the arch of night,
pink so striking it cannot belong,
gum, lipgloss: signs and portents;
something in the meaty
compost of bodies, the music, the brawn of engines.

Audrey felt the chugging pistons knock,
the oily crowbar at the knees,
the stink of metal and heat. She kept her lips closed,
flipped her gum like a pancake, her tongue
flattened, pushed, until it hurt.

The bleechers shook, the young mothers
cupped their babies round the ears. Kerchiefs,
white tiaras, and the infinite blessing
of breathable cotton
walked in a pungent sheen
under the lights or did the seats a kindness
with a more mundane kind of shifting.

"So, they squeal around the track
like crazy planets, growl and bear their teeth,
push and bump and bang like toddlers
over a stuffed frog?"
"Stop being such a pain in the ass."

Epithalamium

At Matins,
pause. Doves
in covens congregate, and swans
complain.

Virgins in black
beckon with palaver,
murmur, simmer
in weather's swelter.

Cracked mirrors, lost connections,
clamour in pieces,
Pride undo, that vain adorning,
unmask the treble Graces.

Goose and gander, in planes
opposing, crush
the tenuous membrane,
concoct delerium,

dismantle the matrix.
Bell's cacophonous
pulse intones
Excaliburs, stilettos,

baubles and obols.
O brazen Philomel
perched in a pristine ilex,
preen and genuflect,

perfect the conflagration
of Aurora,
Beltane's fabulous
conjunction of azures.

Dark Dark Dark

Now loose the terror of Leviathan,
Immortal Cetus, of the quiet deeps,
And make superfluous the merman's fin
That innocently gambols in the brine.
Beyond the palisades, the spanning lights
Arrayed on stones to hail the pilot's brow,
Lies but the Night's irresolute enigma,
The quandary's palaver, the conceits
Of convoluted quatrains. Query cliffs
To learn the black arithmetic of angles,
The verities of heights; comport and truce
With fallen angels for the salve of peace.
For who would masticate the fruit and make
His trespass from the permancence of Spring
To swagger in mortality, to steep
His blood in danger and experience,
Must coven with such avatars, be privy
To ministrations of dark kith and kindred.
Bellow and bray that blond and tender maids
Be taken to the dragon's tooth, be stripped
And cuffed upon the tree made two by fire,
The forked and brittle altar, that their breasts,
Pink-crested teardrops, may bring down the beast
To burn and consummate; speak out that lambs
Be slit and bled, that innocence be drowned,
That all the new be bright in immolation.
Now mage and seer conspire, and Daphne curls
In fear among her leaves, Apollo's bow
Extends for seasoned meat, Olympian yard
Ensanguined with the spoils of sacrifice!
I stand and summon under druid stones.

Radcliffe Melancholic

i.

With knee upraised and pen prepared he labors
to invest with bone and sinew his haunting phantoms:
an architect of order wrung from chaos,
fisher of Spiritus Mundi; a seeker of talismans
and tenderer of trinkets to basilisks. The dust
has crept upon all things and patinated
the objects of the visible world, and in this dross
the finger of Radcliffe trails, describing patterns
of supple flesh saved from infirmity
by active and regenerative desire,
rejuvinating and preserving lust.

A genuine satyr, unappeased and pining
perpetually, he observes, insatiable
and permanently unsated, his secreted eye
swollen with wonted visions, unbreakable lens
in torment trained on divers titillations,
voyeur and victim of venial predilections;
and yet, not this alone. Albeit fleshed
and robed in beauty his beloved spirits
loiter in chambers sewn with silver threads
of flute and violin, and there is laughter.

The girls are tender and the songs are sweet:
pristene calves rest on the arms of chairs,
bottoms recumbent, spread in warm divans;
and books lie open, occasionally thumbed.
By such is Radcliffe haunted, rendering him
vain and indiscernable. Soft smoke curls
from candles scented of jasmine and lavender,
enfolding and confounding him. His perfumed
doxies idle or wander aimlessly, their tread
dollops with sound virtually undecibled
the cavernous hollows of his skull. He sits
transfixed, his quill and tablet in neglect,
and surreptitiously attends each thresh
of softened thigh and the sublime constriction
of flesh in action: the flexing of broad haunches
flushed in sanguine absence of maidenhead.

But prudence guides him and a civil demeanor,
nor is he wont to proffer the leering invasion
of public eyes in public. He undertakes
no silver tongued seduction, is taciturn
and, in affected nonchalance, retiring; but burning,
he stagnates. Time, with her infinite skein,
unwinds his days and still the abyss yawns, white
and blinding in its emptiness, a palette
that mocks with nothing, not even the errant swirls
and loops that indicate a moving hand,
transparent cubes etched in the inviting margins,
or faces scribbled, or breasts in silhouette.
Nothing. Abhorrent absolute: sheer absence.

Infatuate of an ideal without fixity (because
lacking substance but not entirely divested
of identity), he lives behind his eyes, beholds
Arcadian sub-realms: green Elysiums
his wonted habitat and cherished demesne.
Lulled by coos of Keatsian nightingales
his hand is numb and indolently rests,
debilitated in rapture, oppressed to stasis.

Inebriate of luxurious Aprils, the interminable
burgeoning of undecaying Mays,
this Adam of his own eternal Spring
in self-imposed abandonment, invokes
wet-wristed muses who elude him, coy
as naiads sheened by brooks. Is this aesthetic
or merely self-defeating? it may be asked
and yet the answer is of a certainty
the latter, and the rub is there. We have heard
of gardens run to riot, whether forsaken
or never adequately tended: Swinburne tells of one
hard by a sea that will be our treasure trove.

ii.

In such a place he wanders. Down and away the surf
slides forever and folds her silver raiment.
Even among his flowers he smells her salt
and hears the faint falsetto of gulls in azure.
His head Icarian, he aspires to Heaven, and yet
in flesh his heels find purchase in soft loam.
White cherubs fluting water, feathers chipped,
flaunt wings and exhibit their immaculate balance,
dimpled and rigid until the final trump.

The muck of windfall, wet brown mulch of leaves,
and festering, foaming-over fruit. A ceiling
of branches arched above and intermingling
keeps the place in shade, in somber darkness.
In a given hour we will find our subject here,
apart from the barren house whose turrets and gables
add shadow to shadow, and which, like an ancient vessel,
cracks like gunfire. In those dusty chambers
Radcliffe dreams, at nightfall; but such dreams
will have no witness: let him be chary of them.
We only want such dreams as would be songs,
such as would cheer Silenus steeped in his tankard,
the bacchanalian visions, the dreams he summons
before his inward eye, wrought with volition.

The clutter of roses, the patter of water, the dank
smell of stone, and somewhere, like the face of a girl
behind a veil, the sun in ambiguous effulgence floats,
her brilliance paled by cumuli. She has become
the maiden in waiting, retires in billowy cloud,
her curcuit negligible. In the sea's mirror at twilight
she gives the birds their splendor. But the pallor of one
in hue no darker than his fractured fountains,
complected whiter than such stone, remains.

The darkness suits him. In his somnolent farings
he cleaves to shadow, with feline coyness elusive
of light that violates his canopy. The night
is kindred, being conjuror and creator,
father of fables, of fanciful things and fey.
Dian, chaser of tine and talon, be with him,
our wandering child, be guide and guardian
among his ruins. Upon your silver breast
he suckles, a lecherous infant, of that cold pablum
nourished, and to it interminably addicted.

A benediction to his windy casements,
anoint his barren house, glow on his spires,
and wink at his revolving weathercocks.
Perched in his gutters, be his paramour,
impaled upon his posts, his courtezan;
and creeping slowly to his coverlet
attend him, blue equestrienne. For these
are his darkest hours, before the oblivious
false death of sleep, a time of deliberate defilement,
debased and solipsistic venery. Then Dian,
who art not, slip away and give redress
by your absence. Go and hunt in fields celestial.

iii.

His night is not our night, nor his day our day.
In body he exists in one, in mind
the other. His daydream is, in perpetuity,
one solitary and refulgent noon,
Sol fixed in apogee, and his Huntress hidden,
occluded by Olympic summits. He hearkens
to Philomelas in his reveries
and ravens in his waking hours. The flowers
of Arcady he ponders in abstraction
and cloying roses in concrete. His garden
is chaos apprehended, his girls, attired
in fictive flesh, are clearly comprehended. Once
he lived as any other earthly child
before the blessing of the rose turned curse,
before the fountains proved of supple figure.

He stepped from boyhood into song. Sabrinas
rose, stippled with water; Corinnas sidled,
skirted in voluptuous verse; Lucastas
pined in sainted constancy. He plighted
troth to his kindred, scribbled epithalamiums,
and swore his oath: our poor bucolic bachelors
will find sweet consummation, will be attended
by leaning maids upon goat-trodden hills
as fitting compensation for a sonnet.

The wind caws; stars are quenched like tapers; night
covers our subject in its heavy raiment.
He rises, in the cottony web of dreams
woven like a chrysalis. All is shaken
in the buffeting wind, the pushed and tousled
trees rattle and scratch at teary glass, banshees
bellow in pandemonium. In shadow
he slips between the rusted gates and wanders
misted by rainfall, through the crooked stones,
padding in loam, tented in bougainvillea. The world
would liefer not abide such men, is fain
to harbor a domestic medium. Withal,
he was his bane, his dreams anathema,
his constructs cancerous. Now Dian, veiled
in the liquescent even, is no assailant
nor venial accomplice. Soon she slips
unreckoned under the battered ocean. Dawn
spills timorously on the waking world and finds
him still as statuary, sodden by rain.
The earth is dewed in birdsong, gemmed by matins,
the garden crisped with mornfrost. Necklaced flowers
melt like weeping nuns at novena, their petals
rosaries baptized by infatuate tears.

Winds at rest, the sky is flecked with clouds
perambulating like swans, their white disorder
in blithe accord with one who idles, adrift
in derelict ennui, through accrued dementia,
fain for his paramours, their fair and roseate
curves appareled in diaphanous dress. Come
lambs that gambol on green hills, soft fleeced,
where Pan winds his organic horn; white flocked,
make hillocks boil, make all one teeming May,
fecund and prodigal. Come brooding swain,
crack pated nympholept, in rapt concupiscence
ring concords, sonorous hullabaloos of song.

Druid among the stones, among changing leaves,
whispers of Zephyrus, the busy drone
of bees afield, the clamor of birds; come
Apollonian priest, obsequious acolyte
and Pierian avatar; vouchsafe to us
the wonders of Hippocrene and Helicon,
the abluent waters and monuments. He wanders
in perpetuity, in wonderment.

Radcliffe Libidinous

He fashions dozens, but how can one conceive
of such a multitude? A duet or trio
would be a bounty, and far more conscionable.
The eye was broken at each point of the compass,
smothered in yielding curves and cloves, the weight
of redolent bodies tinct with maidenhair
so finely golden; reft of maidenhead,
this gluttonous throng of sodomites would sooner
suffocate the man than leave him sated.

Only in that transcendent world can one
surfeit of such a feast, where faces dimly
smile without identity, red mouths
sickled in soft laughter. These voluptuaries
are paranormal, their concupiscence
classical, a lydian architecture
polished to the pillars of their teeth.

Our timid sensualist in such environs,
supine and tight lipped, naked as a cupidon,
awash in spittle of his concubines,
slides toward sleep. His doxies dissipate
and loom disfigured, a diffuse amalgam.

Oddly enough, his morphean visions lack
prurience altogether, being rather
random labyrinthine mysteries,
replete with treacherous spiral staircases
endlessly descending into darkness,
or pointless pivoting in mazy houses,
panicked opening and closing of doors
in windy rooms with shuttered windows. Dreams

of the conscious kind, made of volitional ego,
is our material here, not slumber's jetsam,
the fast forgotten junk of sleep. He wakes
and lives in purity among cold stones
and loamy garden pathways, under trees
in wonted desolate shadows, kin to flowers
that throng in numb congestion, chafing hands
in pockets barren as a mendicant's,
lost in umbrageous eden, unaccosted
by woman or serpent, unattended by angels.

Sagacious virgin, in reticent abstinence,
bookish and unbecoming, this erudite
fisher of tomes, his fingers black with text,
grows more myopic in morose degrees.
Obscured in self inflicted quarantine,
a creature dieted on intellection,
sequestered spirit, carnate poltergeist,
he looms in silence in his corridors,
a gaunt ensanguined ghost, a visitant
in transient vagrancy whose small migrations
unsettle dust and mist the windowpanes.

And yet our pity would be squandered on one
who never sorrows absolutely, never
remains disconsolate nor ruminates
in anguish long enough to feel its sting,
who slips in fancy out of deprivation
and lives, the master of his empire, vain
and sated anarch of his hollow heaven.

Radcliffe Heroic

Mad to slay the insolent dragon, at hand
the tempered sword, and shod in worn boot leather,
he mounts the redoubtable siege and puts to rout
the fiery beast who founders in base confusion.

The virgin struggles in her cuffs, her tattered dress
imparts a perfect tender little breast.
In soot she shines in desperate sweat, her hands
blistered in manacles but fragile, soft
as errant petals floating on still water.

The beast expires in impotent flames. Our hero
ascends the dormant tail and plunges his blade
again through evil's hide. His stallion stamps
and pulls against its tether, the nostrils steam,
the mouth grinds, its hair a tenebrous gloss.

The old scenarios, rehearsed like ritual,
virtual, on the cusp of experience,
the vital distilled from fancy. No man lives
guided by stars, but gathers sense from abstractions,
perennial percepts rounded into form
and realized, conceptualized in time.

In a certain sense the dragon lives and dies
in splendor, at the hand of prince or pauper,
his massacre no tawdry sacrifice
but symbol of the necessary virtues.

We enter phantasmagoria, manic mozaics
splashed in chaos on the walls of the skull,
or imagine we do, when in the presence of order
so subtle its pristine character appears
as mad disorder. His waking melancholia
is perhaps a deception, his heralded ennui
a mask, his madness a deliberate ruse.

Promethean he hangs, harried by hours
which pass us in innocuous swiftness, days
that crawl like epochs in his mythic mind.
That verse of Blake's, to hold infinity
in the palm of your hand and eternity in an hour
may not be merely mystic rigamarole
and could have pertinence here. Sifting old saws
may well disclose more verities than chaff.

Gallant in longcoat, under a veiling hat brim,
walks our derelict protagonist,
or sweeps, a stir among the literati
where women smile behind their hands, a preening
gaggle of powdered forgeries, showcased
accessories of the fawning mock-aesthetic.

He would be thus, but ambulates at sundown
in solitude along a strand where silver
water and light conjoin, his splendorous sea
star chandeliered, loftily scored by gulls.

Radcliffe Resigned

Alone, I stand between two mirrors,
enamored of twin reflections. The eyes behind me
haunt me, and the eyes before me, sunken lights
in atrophy, countenance in rebuke. I sing
with narrow throat, not warbling like a bird,
in senseless gaiety, but with a tongue
that lacks all acumen: cacophonous gutturals
patinate the glass with brief white mist
and wanly die in dull reverberation.

I love not God nor any counting angel,
insidious perpetrators of imposition,
fallacious criminals, cosmic voyeurs.
The wings of fountains are more apt to flight
than fictive seraphic vans, such stone more sweet
than manna from hallucinated heaven.

Certainly one has heard the bard of Erin
promulgate that Arcady is dead,
such I affirm, and asseverate in grief,
though I would wantonly resuscitate
her pastoral splendor and make her evergreen.

To Hell all heavens that live in spite of man,
in spite of nature, all anemic nirvanas
where in cross legged impotence man withers
in docile imbecility. Such vacuous
substitutes for life will not sustain
a grain of what is good in man, nor may
inseminate nor vitalize his blood.

The summer rain is noisy in the gutters,
gathers in cloudy ponds and brims the fountains;
lichen weaves its mucky velvet; the worms
insinuate in gluey holes and surface,
birthed in pink health; fluttering birds sing matins;
gulls like sirens weave their dissonant cries
in shrieking tapestry; the warming stones
are black and shining. Now I hear the brine,
a thin and salty lick on the ear, a solace
and saturating constant. Come, she beckons,
in sibilant consonants, mellifluous vowels
that summon with the curls of surf, such sounds
promising one perfect consummation.
