Chicken a la Avon

She stood in strange resolve upon the curb
Till up she stretch'd her downy throat and stepped
With hideous cry upon the stony pave
And, scuttling madly, gained the other side.
But wherefore to this task she plied herself
Remains a mystery, a knot tied up
In tangled ends of silly chickenhood.
